Der Fokus liegt dabei auf jenen Problemen, die den Menschen betreffen, bzw. dadurch erst entstehen, dass der Mensch mit seinen Bedürfnissen und Anforderungen bei der Planung derartiger Systeme nicht ausreichend beachtet wird.

Die resultierenden Probleme sind insbesondere mangelnde Motivation zur Teilnahme am System und Angst, wertvolles Wissen könnte von anderen zum Machtgewinn oder ähnlichem missbraucht werden. Die Aussage, dass Wissen sich bei Teilung vermehrt, und dass das System nur durch Teilnahme attraktiv werden kann, wird dabei meist nicht akzeptiert.
Zur Lösung dieser Probleme wird der Ansatz der „Knowledge Communities“ vorgestellt. Hierbei dreht sich alles um eine bessere Einbindung des Menschen in ein System. Die Bildung einer Community soll den einzelnen Nutzer emotional mit dem System verbinden, so dass die Teilnahme daran weitgehend automatisch geschieht. Zusätzlich spielen dabei auch bestimmte Instrumente, die zur Nutzung anregen sollen, eine Rolle.

Schließlich wird gezeigt, dass sich hinter diesem Konzept interessante und auch erfolgreiche Ideen verbergen, die das Thema Knowledge Management weiterbringen können.
