Die legendäre Abhandlung über die drei Betrüger (Moses, Jesus und Mohammed) zählt zu den herausragenden Schlüsseltexten der französischen Aufklärung. Die Schrift markiert den Übergang von der rationalen Religionskritik zum konsequenten Atheismus in der Philosophie der Neuzeit und war z.B. auch für de Sade ein wichtiger Ausgangspunkt.



Es gibt weder Gott noch das Jenseits, weder Freiheit noch Verantwortung - sondern der Mensch ist sterblich und Teil der Natur. So lautet die radikale, den Standpunkt der Deisten überbietende Botschaft des gegen Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts entstandenen "Traité des trois imposteurs", der die Lehren von Moses, Jesus und Mohammed als Lug und Trug zurückweist.



Die legendenumwobene Schrift fand im 18. Jhd. (zunächst in einer Vielzahl von Abschriften, ab 1768 im Druck) große Verbreitung. Sie gilt sodann als Schlüsseldokument für die Anfänge und das Programm des strikt materialistischen Flügels der französischen Aufklärung: bereits 50 Jahre vor d'Holbach bot der "Traité" den Aufriß für dessen "Système de la nature", und war später für den Marquis de Sade der Ausgangspunkt für die radikale Desavouierung des Begriffs der Moral.



Der unbekannte Verfasser des "Traité" begriff sich nicht als Autor, sondern als Vermittler: sein Text stützt sich auf Anleihen bei Hobbes, Spinoza und Vanini, d.h. auf Paraphrasen und Umdeutungen in aufklärerischem Pathos. Der Band präsentiert den Text in kritischer Edition (nach der Ausgabe von 1768) mit deutscher Übersetzung; Einleitung und kommentierende Anmerkungen des Herausgebers erhellen die Aspekte der Entstehungs- und Wirkungsgeschichte der Schrift und geben Nachweise über die zugrundeliegenden Quellen.
