Dieses Zitat des Schriftstellers Frank Thiess drückt aus, welche Bedeutung von der Schilderung des Handlungsumfeldes ausgeht, außer der, dass sie dem Leser beschreibt an welchem Schauplatz er sich befindet. Nach Cleanth Brooks’ und Robert Penn Warrens Werk Understanding Fiction liegt der Sinn der Beschreibung des Settings nicht in der wirklichkeitsnahen Exaktheit, sondern in dem, was sie für die Erzählung leistet. Dies sei zum Einen, die Unterstreichung des Charakters der Akteure, wobei Brooks und Warren bemerken, dass Setting nicht ausreiche um einen Charakter darzustellen, es verfeinert bloß das Bild. Zum Anderen beeinflusse das Setting die Atmosphäre des Geschehenden, es kann zum Beispiel Heiterkeit, Beklemmung oder Schmerz vermitteln. Allerdings sei die Schilderung und Empfindung dieser Umgebung die des Erzählers und daher subjektiv. Der Leser bekomme also ein durch die Wahrnehmung und Emotionen des Erzählers gefiltertes Bild vermittelt.
F. Scott Fitzgerald ist ein Meister der Disziplin Bedeutung durch Setting zu transportieren. Diese Arbeit soll nun darstellen, wie der Autor in seinem Werk The Great Gatsby verfährt: Welche symbolträchtigen Schauplätze er verwendet und wie er Natur und Landschaft als Bedeutungsträger einsetzt.
Fitzgerald unterteilt die Welt seines Romans in vier Hauptsettings: 1. East Egg; 2. West Egg; 3. the valley of ashes; and 4. New York City. Diese vier Haupteile enthalten zwei weitere Unterteilungen: East Egg beinhaltet nur das Haus der Buchanans, wobei West Egg Nick Carraways und Jay Gatsbys Häuser mit einbezieht. Zum Valley of ashes gehören Wilsons Autowerkstatt, Michaelis’ Restaurant und auch das Werbeplakat des Augenarztes Dr. T.J. Eckleburg. New York City beinhaltet die Büros in denen einige der Akteure arbeiten, die Wohnung, die Tom Buchanan für seine Geliebte Myrtle Wilson gemietet hat, sowie das Plaza Hotel, in dem die entscheidende Kraftprobe zwischen Tom und Gatsby stattfindet...
