Längst eingegangen in den Kanon alter Meister, wird dessen ebenso stürmisches wie kurzes Leben (ca. 1571-1610) von einer Vielzahl an biographischen und wissenschaftlichen Legenden umrankt: ein streitsüchtiger Egozentriker, Rebell, Erneuerer der Kunst und vehementer Verfechter des Naturalismus, der nur das malte, was er mit bloßem Auge sah. Eine herausragende Künstlerpersönlichkeit. Herausragend auch, die inzwischen außerhalb jeglicher Relation stehende Masse an Sekundärliteratur und die, seit dessen Werk von der Staubschicht eines jahrhunderdtelangen Vergessens zu Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts befreit wurde, noch immer anhaltende Konjunktur Caravaggios; ein Langzeitprojekt, nicht nur hinsichtlich der stets neue Fragezeichen aufwerfenden Zuschreibungsproblematik.
Angesichts dieser Situation wird sich diese Arbeit, weit entfernt davon einen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit erheben zu wollen, bescheiden ausnehmen. Dabei konzentriert sich die Betrachtung auf zwei frühe Werke, die Bacchusdarstellungen von 1593-94 und 1597, anhand welcher, durch eingehende Beschreibung, Bildvergleiche und der Resümierung gängiger Interpretationsansätze, wie sie unter anderem von Hibbard (1988), Prater (1992) oder Held (1996) bereits ausführlich diskutiert wurden, die ästhetischen Implikationen des caravaggesken Frühwerks illustriert werden sollen. Neben dessen Besonderheit polyvalent angelegter Deutungsstrukturen, wird es daneben vor allem – hierbei Kretschmer (1991) und Krüger (2001) folgend – um die im bildkonzeptuellen Programm unmittelbar nachzuweisende Thematisierung der Ambivalenz zwischen Darstellung und Dargestelltem, dem Verhältnis zwischen Bild und Betrachter, sowie der Autoreferenzialität des Mediums gehen. Der letzte Teil widmet sich in diesem Sinne dem Ansatz von Pichler (2006).
