Die Anekdote, die ihn als Zweijährigen zeichnet, der von Königin Elisabeth nur „mein kleiner Lord-Siegelbewahrer“ genannt wird, lassen bereits, auch unter der Beachtung der Fama, ein bezeichnendes Licht auf ihn werfen und zeigen die gesellschaftlichen Kreise, in denen er sich Zeit seines Lebens bewegt, die ihn prägen und Anstoß für seine Karriere, seinen Ehrgeiz und seine Werke sind.
Neid und Missgunst am englischen Court, seine verzwickte Stellung unter der Herrschaft Elisabeths, mit seinem Freund und deren Günstling Lord Essex, seine späte Karriere, die ihr abruptes Ende in einer Anklage wegen Bestechlichkeit findet und zudem seine zahlreichen Schriften und Essays lassen ihn seinen Tod überdauern.
Einerseits werden ihm die Schriften Shakespears zugesprochen, seine Reden vor dem Court wurden mit Angst verfolgt, seine Rhetorik war laut Zeitzeugen unnachahmlich, andererseits wurden ihm fundierte wissenschaftliche Kenntnisse abgesprochen, deren Wahrheitsgehalt sich in der Abbildung seines Todes zeigt, der auf sein erstes und einziges empirisches Experiment gefolgt sein soll, in dem beweisen wollte, dass sich die Haltbarkeit toter Hühnchen durch Ausstopfen mit Schnee verlängern ließe, sich dabei erkältete und schließlich an einer Lungenentzündung verstarb.
All das reicht bereits aus nicht nur um Legende zu werden, sondern auch das Wirken Bacons zu seiner Zeit, seine Werke im historischen Kontext, sowie deren Relevanz für unsere Zeit zu hinterfragen.
Folgende Arbeit will sich einerseits mit der Person Francis Bacon befassen, seine Werke und Ideen vorstellen und in den historischen Kontext einordnen, um im Hauptteil eine eingehende Betrachtung der Utopie Bacons „Nova Atlantis“ vorzunehmen, deren Anspruch an die Renaissance und Versprechen für die Moderne schließlich in einer Konklusion besprochen werden soll.
