Rousseau, ein Freund von provokanten und irritierenden Auftakten in seinen Schriften, hätte dieser Aussage womöglich zugestimmt. Jean Jaques Rousseau, geboren 1712 in der Stadtrepublik Genf, war eine schillernde Persönlichkeit mit einem wechselhaften Leben. So vielfältig die Stationen seines Lebens waren, so vielfältig waren auch die Themen, zu denen sich Rousseau in seinen Schriften geäußert hat1. Rousseau, der sich Zeit seines Lebens mit dem kopieren von Noten finanziell über Wasser hielt, komponierte und verfasste diverse Schriften zur Musik. Seine „Träumereien eines einsamen Spaziergängers“ lösten im späten 18. Jahrhundert einen Ausbruch des romantischen Naturalismus aus. Überhaupt gilt er mit seinen Überlegungen zum Wesen des Menschen und der Natur als ein Vorbereiter der Romantik. Sein Erziehungsroman „Emil“ ist ein bedeutendes, noch heute in Universitätskursen gelesenes Buch zur Pädagogik und Kindeserziehung. Der „Emil“ gilt als wichtigstes pädagogisches Werk seit der Antike und erste „weltliche“ Theorie der Erziehung. Schließlich hat Rousseau mit seiner Autobiographie „Bekenntnisse“ einen neuen Maßstab in dieser literarischen Gattung gesetzt und sie in ihrer Entwicklung mitbestimmt. Am stärksten, bzw. in der heutigen Zeit am offensichtlichsten, hat Rousseau die Nachwelt jedoch mit seinen politisch-philosophischen Schriften beeinflusst. Rousseau, der Vater des „contrat social“ (CS), zählt neben Hobbes und Locke zu den bedeutendsten Vertragstheoretikern und steht für die sogenannte Identitätstheorie innerhalb der Demokratietheorien. Sein politisches Hauptwerk, der CS, geht dabei der Frage nach, wie und wann Herrschaft überhaupt legitim wird. Dabei hat Rousseau den Begriff des „volonté générale“2, des Allgemeinwillens, geprägt, den er gegenüber dem Begriff des Gesamtwillen, „volonté de tous“, abgrenzt. [...]
