Abraham Merritt wurde 1884 in Beverley, New Jersey, geboren. Mit 19 wurde er Reporter beim PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, wo er als außerordentlicher Zeitungsmann galt, dessen Berichte über Hinrichtungen, Morde, Selbstmorde nicht zu übertreffen waren. Da er selbst aber nicht der harte Bursche war, diese intensive Beschäftigung mit Gewalttaten zu verkraften, pflegte er seine Nerven mit Alkohol zu beruhigen. Dieser frühe totale Kontakt mit den unerfreulichen Seiten des Lebens mag wohl zu einem guten Teil auch für Merritts spätere Hinwendung zur Fantasy geführt haben.
Während seiner Tätigkeit beim PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER verbrachte er ein abenteuerliches Jahr in Mexiko und Mittelamerika, wo er die Maya-Stadt Tulum erforschte, auf Schatzsuche in Yukatan ging und sogar Blutsbruder eines Indianerstammes in Miraflores wurde. Der Abenteurer, der er in späteren Jahren nicht mehr sein konnte, und als der er sich tief innerlich fühlte, blieb er in seinen Romanen.
