Vae me, puto, concacavi me! Mit diesen Worten beendet Kaiser Claudius in der vom Philo-sophen, Staatsmann und Dichter Seneca verfassten Satire Apocolocyntosis sein Leben und begibt sich folgend auf eine Himmel- und Höllenfahrt. Claudius starb am 13. Oktober 54 und wurde wenige Zeit später als divus Claudius konsekriert. Kurz nach seiner Apotheose erschien die Apocolocyntosis, in der Seneca auf schärfste Weise mit Claudius abrechnet. Dass Seneca die Satire zum einen aus persönlichem Interesse geschrieben hat, ist offenkun-dig und in der Forschung grundlegend anerkannt. Jedoch wirft das Werk noch eine Frage bezüglich einer politischen Absicht auf, die in dieser Arbeit untersucht wird. Diese Frage nach der politischen Intention der Apocolocyntosis wurde in der Forschung kontrovers dis-kutiert und brachte noch keine endgültige Lösung hervor. So vertritt beispielsweise KRAFT die These, dass Seneca die Satire verfasst hat, um sich in der politischen Auseinandersetzung zwischen dem neuen Kaiser Nero und dem leiblichen Sohn des Claudius, Britannicus, auf die Seite Neros zu schlagen. Weiterhin behaupten eine Reihe von Forschern, beispielsweise MÜNSCHER und neuerdings HORSTKOTTE , dass die Apocolocyntosis gegen Agrippina ge-richtet sei. BRINGMANN und KLOFT verbinden mit der Schmähschrift eher eine Kritik der politischen Wirklichkeit und eine Verschmähung des Claudius allgemein als Herrscher. Diese Arbeit soll zeigen, dass Senecas politische Intention darin bestand, seine Einstellung be-züglich der Politik des Claudius darzustellen und ihn allgemein in seiner Herrscherfunktion zu kritisieren, wobei eine vorsichtige Tendenz aristokratischer Einflüsse möglich gewesen wäre. Neben diesem sollen die beiden Interpretationen bezüglich Agrippina und der politi-schen Propaganda widerlegt werden.
Zunächst wird der historisch-politische Hintergrund der Apocolocyntosis dargestellt, wobei die beiden wichtigsten Akteure Seneca und Claudius näher vorgestellt werden. Anschließend soll anhand einer kurzen Darstellung der wichtigsten Inhalte der Satire ihre Wirkung andeutungsweise gezeigt werden. Im Anschluss wird die politische Intentionsabsicht Senecas in der Apocolocyntosis aus den obengenannten Perspektiven diskutiert.
Die wichtigsten Quellen zur Deutung der Intentionsabsicht des Werkes sind Senecas Apocolocyntosis selbst und weiterhin die historiographischen Darstellungen in Tacitus‘ ‚Annales‘ und Suetons ‚De vita Caesarum‘.
