Mit Ivan Illich verbindet Fromm eine langjährige Freundschaft, entstanden aus der Nachbarschaft des von Illich aufgebauten Dokumentationszentrum CIDOC und Fromms Haus in Cuernavaca in Mexiko. Trotz zum Teil deutlich anderen Positionen Fromms währte die Freundschaft bis zu Fromms Lebensende. Illich gestaltete 1980 beim Tod von Fromm die Kremationsfeier in Bellinzona und machte dabei deutlich, dass ein radikaler Humanismus sie verband. Dies kommt auch in der Einleitung Fromms zu Illichs Buch Almosen und Folter zum Ausdruck, das vom verfehlten Forschritt in Lateinamerika handelt.
