Der Roman war bereits Gegenstand vielfältiger Abhandlungen, vornehmlich betrachtet unter literarischen, historisch-gesellschaftlichen, politischen und religiösen Gesichtspunkten. Eine genaue Untersuchung der weiblichen Hauptcharaktere und ihrer Positionierung in der spanischen Gesellschaft des 19. Jahrhundert wurde jedoch gemeinhin außer Acht gelassen. Folglich sollen Doña Perfecta und ihre Tochter Rosario, die beiden Protagonistinnen des 1876 in Spanien erschienen Werkes, hier Beachtung finden.
Einführend liefern eine historisch-literarische Einordnung des Romans und biografische Ausführungen zum Autor den Hintergrund der hier vorgenommenen Analyse. Des weiteren wird der Inhalt des zu untersuchenden Romans skizziert und der Lebensraum Orbajosa, der Schauplatz des Geschehens, näher beleuchtet. Der Hauptteil befasst sich mit den weiblichen Romanfiguren Perfecta und Rosario. Untersucht werden ihr äußeres Erscheinungsbild, ihre gegensätzlichen Charakterzüge, ihre unterschiedlichen Rollen in der kleinstädtischen Gesellschaft und ihre Beziehung zueinander. Letztlich beinhaltet das Fazit, neben einem abschließenden Resümee, den Versuch, die beiden Protagonistinnen vergleichend gegenüberzustellen.
Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) wurde auf Gran Canaria geboren und zog im Alter von 19 Jahren nach Madrid. Es folgten ein Studium der Rechtswissenschaft, zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen von Romanen und Theaterstücken, eine Amtsperiode als Abgeordneter der Liberalen Partei und 1897 die Aufnahme in die Spanische Akademie. Galdós blieb unverheiratet, unterhielt jedoch wechselnde Liebesbeziehungen und hatte eine uneheliche Tochter (vgl. Lindsay 1979: 3; Wittschier 1993: 207).
Mit mehr als 80 Romanveröffentlichungen gilt Galdós als „produktivster Autor des 19. Jahrhunderts“ (Wittschier 1993: 207) und seine Werke lassen sich in drei Phasen aufteilen: Die Novelas españolas de la primera época, zu denen auch der Roman Doña Perfecta zählt, die Novelas españolas contemporáneas und die unvollendete Serie der Episodios nacionales.
Die Verschriftlichung und Veröffentlichung des Romans Doña Perfecta in den 70er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts fällt in die Zeit der Rezeption des französischen Realismus und Naturalismus in Spanien (vgl. Matzat 1993: 128).
