Comme ni son supérieur, intégriste et tyrannique, ni aucun de ses confrères n’est capable d’en mesurer l’importance, il décide de le soumettre à un saint moine copte du monastère Saint-Antoine, situé de l’autre côté du Golfe de Suez.

Un an auparavant, Salvo, chirurgien éminent, est victime d'un attentat dans lequel périt sa fille Flora, journaliste d’investigations. Depuis lors, amnésique, il végète chez sa sœur à Cefalu, en Sicile, jusqu’au jour où des indices l'amènent à reprendre ses esprits et à entreprendre, en compagnie de Tiziana, une amie de sa fille, également journaliste, la recherche du Livre qui s'est révélé être l’objet de son enquête.

L’Internationale intégriste veut détruire le Livre parce que l’image qu'il donne de Dieu n’est pas conforme au Dieu vengeur qui se prépare à châtier une humanité en perdition.
