Länder - Zeitalter Weltkriege, Note: 1,3, Universität Flensburg (Geschichte und ihre Didaktik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Während der Lektüre von Rolf Hochhuths Stellvertreter begegnete mir Papst Pius XII. zum ersten Mal. Ergänzende Recherchen zu der historischen Person des Papstes, der mit bürgerlichem Namen Eugenio Pacelli hieß, offenbarten mir dann schnell eine in der Geschichtswissenschaft höchst umstrittene Figur. Das Schauspiel selbst hat einen beträchtlichen Teil zur Entstehung einer Debatte beigetragen, die bis in die heutige Zeit hineinreicht. Hochhuth erhebt in seinem Bühnenstück die Anschuldigung, dass der Papst angesichts des Holocausts aus eigenen wirtschaftlichen Interessen und aus Angst vor der Ausbreitung des Kommunismus „geschwiegen“ habe.
Obwohl es auch vor der Uraufführung des Stellvertreters 1963 bereits kritische Stimmen gegen das Verhalten Pius’ XII. während des Zweiten Weltkrieges, insbesondere zur Judenverfolgung und -vernichtung gegeben hatte, begann sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt auch das öffentliche Bild des Pacelli-Papstes zu wandeln. Waren sich noch unmittelbar nach dessen Tod 1958 nicht nur die Gläubigen „einig in ihrem Lob für die Lebensleistung Eugenio Pacellis“ , so waren die Anschuldigungen gegen Pius XII., auch von Seiten der Historiker, seit Hochhuths Stellvertreter doch gravierend. Diese Vorwürfe gegen den Papst richten sich auch schon gegen Pacellis Aktivitäten vor Beginn seines Pontifikates 1939. So habe Pacelli bereits als Kardinalstaatssekretär mit dem von ihm ausgehandelten Reichskonkordat 1933 für eine offizielle Anerkennung Adolf Hitlers und des nationalsozialistischen Regimes vor den Augen der Welt gesorgt. Um das Konkordat nicht zu gefährden, habe er sogar die Selbstauflösung der katholischen Zentrumspartei gefordert. Grundsätzlich soll der Papst totalitäre Regime eher befürwortet haben als liberal-demokratische Rechtsstaatensysteme.
Der immer wieder vorgebrachte Hauptvorwurf gegen Pius XII. ist der des „Schweigens“ zum Holocaust: Er habe trotz früher Kenntnis und zahlreicher Bitten aus aller Welt um einen öffentlichen Protest sich nicht gegen die nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen an den europäischen Juden ausgesprochen. Als Gründe hierfür werden entweder seine Deutschlandfreundlichkeit – aufgrund seiner langjährigen Amtszeit als Nuntius in Deutschland –, eigene antisemitische Ansichten, oder seine große Angst vor dem Kommunismus genannt, vor dem nur ein Pakt mit dem Nationalsozialismus die westliche Welt hätte schützen können. Die Vorwürfe sind somit politischer und moralischer Natur.
