Ob als verkaufsförderndes Argument in der Produktwerbung, Fragebogenthema einer Jugendlichenzeitschrift oder Stammtischprognose für kommende Generationen, in Gesprächen oder Texten aus diversen Bereichen ist dieses Wort nicht mehr wegzudenken. Wie so häufig im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch, wird unter diesem Wort jedoch verschiedenes verstanden; von der positiv konnotierten Individualisierung im Sinne eines “Herausbildens von Persönlichkeit”, die gerne in der Werbung Verwendung findet, bis hin zu Verwendungen des Wortes im kritischen Zusammenhang schwankt der Gebrauch des Wortes “Individualisierung” beträchtlich. Der Soziologe Markus Schroer merkt dazu an (Schroer 2000: 13): „In der Öffentlichkeit ist Individualisierung dabei schnell zur Generalformel avanciert, mit der man verschiedenartigste soziale Probleme erklären kann. Erklärt ist damit zwar nicht eines der angesprochenen Probleme, aber man verfügt zumindest über eine Formel, einen Hinweis, wo das Problem zu suchen ist. Individualisierung bedeutet in diesem Zusammenhang unübersehbar Egoismus, Vereinzelung, Yuppisierung, moralische Verwahrlosung.”
Aber auch in den auf klare Begrifflichkeiten angewiesenen Sozialwissenschaften ist das Wort selten klar definiert, häufig unterschiedlich konnotiert und als Konzept umstritten. Eine soziologische Arbeit kommt alleine in den Werken sechs klassischer Soziologen wie Simmel oder Durkheim auf nicht weniger als 24 verschiedene Dimensionen des Begriffes (Kippele 1998 in Kron 2000: 8), und selbst die „Gallionsfiguren der Individualisierungsdiskussion” (Kron 2000: 7), Ulrich Beck und seine Ehefrau Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim sehen Individualisierung als als vielgestaltiges und unscharfes Phänomen (Kron 2000: 7). Unklarheit der Begriffe, Verschiedenartigkeit der Ansätze und wenig eindeutige empirische Studien verleiten Thomas Kron, den Herausgeber eines Sammelbandes zu dem Thema (Kron 2000), zu der höhnischen Schlussfolgerung, dass das Positive im “Individualisierungs-Tohuwabohu” (Kron 2000: 8) systemtheoretisch betrachtet zumindest zur Autopoiesis, zur Selbstgenerierung des Systems Wissenschaft beiträgt und dem einen oder anderen Autoren ermöglichen würde, seine Individualität durch karrierefördernde Beiträge zum Thema “Individualisierung” unter Beweis zu stellen.
