Bei Senioren ist Selbstmordgedanke eher ein schleichendes Phänomen. In der Öffentlichkeit wird es nicht in den Schlagzeilen der Zeitungen berichtet. Es herrscht vielleicht der Gedanke vor, dass der alte Mensch seines langen Lebens überdrüssig werden darf. In Verbindung mit dem bevorstehenden Tod des betagten Menschen herrschen die Schlagwörter Hospiz, Sterbebegleitung oder Euthanasie vor. Der Hintergrund dieser Begriffe liegt im Leidensverständnis durch unheilbare Krankheiten. Aber die steigende Selbstmordrate ab dem sechsten Lebensjahrzehnt kann pauschal nicht immer mit todbringenden Erkrankungen in Verbindung gebracht werden. Es gibt kritische Lebensphasen, die im Zusammenhang von Selbstmordabsichten berücksichtigt werden müssen. Krisen können die Entscheidung, das Leben frühzeitig zu beenden, wesentlich beeinflussen. So steht bei dieser Arbeit der Punkt im Vordergrund, wie die Epidemiologie des Suizids im Alter durch Psychologen bereits beschrieben ist. Es ist bei analysierendem Gedankengang auch wichtig festzuhalten, welche Motive hinter Suiziden stecken. Zusätzlich wird in diesem Kontext versucht, die Vorzeichen sowie die Präventionsmaßnahmen festzustellen. In Bezug auf die Präventionsmaßnahmen muss geklärt werden, was der einzelne Betroffene selber in seiner kritischen Situation unternehmen kann, und welchen Beitrag die Gesellschaft zur Vorbeugung etwaiger Selbstmordhandlung bieten soll.
